On October 28, 2013 CenterPoint Energy was scheduled to begin replacing approximately 2,600 feet of 10-inch steel natural gas distribution pipe with 6-inch pipe. This has been delayed until late November. The digging for the pipe is to be 4 to 5 feet deep- well above the groundwater fractures that feeds Coldwater Spring.  

The land above Coldwater is approximately 249 meters above sea level. The water flows to the spring is 242 meters.  

This gives approximately an 18 foot buffer that protects the spring, even at it's lowest point. 

The reason for the gas line construction is because the old gas pipe that once feed the Bureau of Mines and Veterans Administration Complex that once was in Coldwater Park, is being shut down due to it's age and that it is no longer needed. This will be replaced with a new pipeline will border the bike trial.

To install the pipe it will be bored into the ground from 54th street to approximately the entrance of Coldwater. This is where it nears the fractures that feed Coldwater Spring. At this point they will begin trenching to install the pipeline. The reason for this is to keep the mud/sand slurry that results from boreing, to not inflitrate the water sources to Coldwater Spring. 

This is also where the ground raises even higher as the hill begins to naturally rise at this point. So will the pipeline. They are aiming for an approximately 4 foot depth for the entire length, and will not require any digging into the rock layers.
